The novel Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte told us a story of love and revenge,at the same time it reflected some aspects of human nature. Not everyone is from the same cloth. All of us are in different personalities. Some are generous, some may mean, some may selfish, various. Just because of this, others say we are different.
Since I read Wuthering Heightsby Emily Bronte , I have been in such thought— why we should say Catherine is deviant, and so is Heathcliff? For they do not do as others do — girls must learn to be a lady. When they have grown up , they must marry gentlemen. Boys must learn to be gentle. When they have become a man , they must attempt to hold money and power, so that they can marry a lady. If they are not , they will be considered guilty of heterodoxy, not accepted by the natives. The two main characters of this novel—Catherine and Heathcliff are in such conditions.
In the novel ,Catherine comes from a honored family, who is borne with a silver-spoon in her mouth. However, Heathcliff is only an orphan, bringing back by Old Earnshaw, no money, no status, insulted by all the people, even the servants. These two kids’ personalities are shaped in such different situations. Catherine, a selfish, conceited girl, Heathcliff a self-contemptuous,bearing boy, so contradictory, but they are appeal to each other. Both of them pursue freedom and true love. This is the key point. It seems that we should fulfil this two people for their faith and persistence. In this novel, their love is completely a tragedy, only the two souls wandering in the freezing cold wind and walking under the cold cliff of that deserted land. Whether we should disgust Catherine, for her selfishness and vainness, Thrushcross Grange is swallowed by Heathcliff, Edgar dying sorrowfully, Heathcliff revenging Edgar cruelly. It seems that she is an evil. To pursue her own happiness, she ignores others’feelings and dignity. What she has done has harmed a lot people who love her, all of thesejust because she does not want to lose her true love. She chooses her own way to look for her love.
Meanwhile, another character of Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte , Heathcliff, if we should hate such a cold and cruel man. In order to revenge, he pretend to love Isabella’ to get Thrushcross Grange, and revenge Hindley to gain Wuthering Heights。He has been notorious in that region. All these are for Catherine, to get her, his sweetheart. To be rich enough so that she will not look down on him. They could be equal.
They do harm to others for their own love, not choosing other alternative but in such way. This is wrong? It needs arguing. Each of us could decide to choose our own ways to harvest love. on the way to pursuit, we just do not think a lot about others. Love blinds most of us to become selfish. Although they are not in a happy ending, do we should say they deserve it? It gives us a lesson. No matter what we have come across, we should not only care about ourselves. Before we make decisions, we must think twice. Harming others will hurt ourselves at last.
